Get Started in Warhammer Age of Sigmar

When heading into the world of Warhammer Age of Sigmar, you must prepare yourself for battle. Warhammer Age of Sigmar is a tabletop miniature game created by Games Workshop in which you wage war against another player’s army. There are multiple different armies for you to choose from and different types of play depending on what you prefer. Warhammer Age of Sigmar replaced Warhammer Fantasy Battle in 2015, with later editions contributing to this game being better than ever.

Filling Your Ranks

When you start your adventures in Warhammer Age of Sigmar, you will need a few essential items to begin your Wargaming experience:

Start Collecting Age of Sigmar IronJawz

You'll need a set of Age of Sigmar miniatures. Depending on the number of points you wish to play with, each model costs points to add to your army. You are best to start off with 500 points minimum. Start Collecting boxes are popular with beginners!

Age of Sigmar DOK Dice

tape measure to be able to quantify the various ways you can bring ruin to your opponents. Warhammer Age of Sigmar’s gameplay is measured in inches rather than centimeters. So a tape measure is a crucial tool when moving your army.

Citadel Tape Measure

Six-sided dice - or D6 as they are known on the Mortal Plains. Every hit, every Wound, and every moment of Fortitude will come down to whether the dice gods have bestowed to you their blessings.

Age of Sigmar Gaming Book

Warhammer Age of Sigmar has a core rulebook that explains how the game works. The turn sequence, generic hero abilities, and more. This is available online for free or you can pick up a physical copy from our store.

If you are in Essex, be sure to pop into the Wayland Games store in Hockley. We have a wide supply of tables, terrain, and gaming mats ready for you to embark on any type of miniature-game adventure. If you want to play at home, start with a flat surface, like a dining table for example. For larger games, an area of 6×4 feet (122cm x 183cm). However, if you are looking at some smaller games, 4×4 feet (122cm x 122cm) will work perfectly.

As long as you and your opponent have a good amount of space in which to play, and put about five pieces of terrain available ready to set the scene - you will be tabletop-ready.

Warhammer Age of Sigmar encompasses four Grand Alliances. These Grand Alliances include OrderChaosDeath, and Destruction. These represent the crushing forces that meet in the Mortal Realms.

Within these Grand Alliances, multiple factions reside underneath them. Each faction will have different abilities, all to wage war against their enemies.

Most factions have a Battletome. These grant your units extra abilities, including a variety of battle traits. Granting you access to the advanced rules for your new army.

Most factions have a Battletome. These grant your units extra abilities, including a variety of battle traits. Granting you access to the advanced rules for your new army.

Looking at your Battletome enables you to understand whether or not you want a unit or model, as you may prefer the special abilities of another. A Battletome encompasses lore regarding your faction's history too. As the history is incredibly rich and detailed within Age of Sigmar, you may find you love a faction purely on their backstory rather than their abilities.

Battletomes also include paint schemes for your chosen faction. You have the choice of whether to use them or to get creative with your own schemes, but they are a great starting point if you are looking for a guide to painting.

Getting Started with Paints and Tools

Getting Started with Paints and Tools

The fun begins now! We here at Wayland Games have you covered when it comes to building and painting the faction of your choice. Delving into the world of miniature building and painting is a lot of fun. It is simple when you get the hang of it, so do not worry too much when you are only beginning. You can buy your tools separately or in kits, but you will especially need Cutters, a Knife, and Glue.

We sell the Warhammer Age of Sigmar Paint and Tools Set at Wayland Games, which includes tools for building as well as paints to get you started with a basic arrangement. Painting is one of the most creative outlets when it comes to miniature tabletop gaming. Even if you do not like painting, having a base coat of the army's signature colors can truly make yours stand out on the battlefield.

Check out our top picks for tools for miniature painting for everything you could need for getting started in the hobby.

Citadel Colour Painting and Building

Being creative with your paint scheme is great to see on the tabletop. This enables you to engage with the wider community of hobbyists worldwide. Whether it be friends you know within the hobby, or new ones online. Some people spend an hour painting a model and some six hours. It is entirely up to you how creative you want to be and how much detail you want to put into your models.

We sell individual paints from various ranges, including Citadel paints. The great thing is, on the back of your Start Collecting box there will be a paint guide of the specific Citadel paints used so you can achieve the paint scheme on the box.

Terrain

Age of Sigmar Terrain

If you wish to add a little spice, along with something for your miniatures to engage with during your games then adding some Warhammer Age of Sigmar terrain will help.

It’s your choice how much terrain you and your opponent would like to use, but five pieces of terrain are generally enough to cover your table. The fun part is that in your Core Rule Book, you can roll a D6 and assign a scenery rule from the scenery table to your terrain. This enables the units within 1’’ range of the specific piece of terrain to either be hindered or assisted. This can easily sway the game if you do not think strategically. The great thing with Warhammer Age of Sigmar is that some factions can use scenery to their advantage.

The Scenery will be linked to their factions, which means they can gain special abilities! Once you’ve got the core rules down, you can look into adding bigger terrain pieces to the board so your units have more to maneuver around as well.

Storing & Transporting your miniatures

Storage Cases for your Miniatures

Your miniatures are very precious and can be quite fragile. To be able to keep them in tip-top shape when storing and transporting them, you need the best possible chance of their survival. You do not want to ruin that paint job you have worked so hard on! Wayland Games stocks various ways to store and transport your miniatures. A particular favorite of many is a Carry Case. We stock Citadel Carry Cases in various sizes depending on the force you are carrying with you. From Skirmish to XL Cases, we have it all.

Your miniatures are pieces of art, especially once you have painted them. No one wants your miniatures to break at any point.
